COMFORT REAL WOMAN

Just as the government forces Scotland to block the Gender Recognition Reform bill - a devastating blow for the trans community and another example of the their spineless stirring of the misplaced anxieties of old bigots - experimental Glasgow duo Comfort announce their long awaited new album What's Bad Enough with righteous and empowering new single 'Real Woman'. The track has long been a standout in their live sets and the recorded version manages capture all of its frenetic, off-kilter energy while allowing the listener to focus in on Natalie's poignant lyricism as she speaks with candidly about her experiences as a trans woman, the discrimination she has faced but also her defiance and immense pride and in herself and community, "I'm as real as Rowling, my deep voice a woman". Speaking on the track and how she has learnt to deal with people's ignorance she states: “As I have gotten older and learnt to love myself, transphobic views have less power over me. I have begun to find them laughable in their ignorance. I want this song to capture the elation you feel when you rise above the people who hate you, when you leave them to writhe in the mire of their own short-sightedness. Transgender people have always been here, and we always will be, we are inevitable, resisting us does nothing but hold everyone back. It can be easy to create art which is bleak when you are insistently alienated, but I wanted this song to be playful and fun, because I am all these things, despite everything.” Comfort are continuing to make music that is innovative, urgent and essential, the best live band around and soon to release what is already shaping up to be the album of the year. What's Bad Enough is set for release on 5th May on Fatcat Records, check out the video for 'Real Woman' here featuring JK Rowling nipple stickers. -Toby Evans-Jesra
